Correlation Between Age and Immigration in Canada

Read Time:3 Minute, 9 Second

Coming to Canada is a dream for many. It is considered one of the best countries in the world for immigrants due to its multiculturalism and anti-discrimination policies. But if you’ve ever gone through the process of immigration, you’ll know that the younger you are, the more appealing you are in the eyes of the Canadian government.

Why does the Canadian Government Value Young Immigrants?

Canada reviews hopeful immigrants using a points system and divides its immigration goals into three main objectives. According to Statistics Canada, these objectives are to:

  • fulfill international and humanitarian obligations;
  • reunite families; and,
  • enrich the Canadian economy.

The main reason younger people have a better chance of immigrating to Canada is that they are more likely to attend school, enter the workforce and contribute to the economy for a longer period. The government views skilled labourers and educated people looking to extend their schooling as highly desirable, and in 2021, 56.3 per cent of immigrants in Canada came to the country through economic immigration.

Societal trends within the country are also a big reason young immigrants are desirable. According to the Canadian Government, domestic Canadians have fewer children, with each woman averaging 1.4 children within her lifespan. The average retirement age is also steadily increasing yearly, and schools are emptier than decades prior with fewer children. Welcoming young immigrants from various cultural backgrounds can offset these trends.

Immigration Age Groups: Statistics and Facts

Canada uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) when assessing express entry criteria, Canada’s main pathway toward acquiring skilled workers.

It shows that the prime age range for immigrants is between 20-29, granting 100 points. With every year that passes after this age, an applicant’s points decreases by five. For instance, if you are 30 years old, you will receive 95 points in the age category. By the time you are 40 years old, you will only receive 45 points. According to the Canadian Immigration Law Firm (CANADIM), immigrants between the ages of 23 and 35 score the highest after considering all the categories of economic immigration.

Recent statistics also show how Canada values newcomers in their prime with decades of life ahead of them. Between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, almost 115,000 immigrants between the ages of 25 to 29 came to Canada. There were nearly 79,000 immigrants between the ages of 30 and 34 and close to 65,000 between the ages of 20 and 24. In comparison, there were only 30,000 between 40 and 44 years old and just 10,000 between 50 and 54.

Even with age working against them, older immigrants are still appealing if they have family connections to Canada, high language proficiency, and work experience.

Is it Easier to Settle at a Young Age?

Young people have more time and incentive to become Canadian citizens since they have a long road ahead. To kick start this process, immigrants must meet the prerequisite of being permanent residents in the country for at least three out of the past five years. Case in point, data from Statistics Canada reveal that only 16.7 per cent of immigrants arriving in Canada in 2016 and 2017 are now citizens compared to the period between 2006-2010, when 78.6 per cent of immigrants had citizen status. This is because those arriving in 2017 must wait until at least 2020 to begin the citizenship process. Immigration and adjusting to new surroundings in your 20s can feel more like an adventure and less of a hassle, making it more enjoyable. Furthermore, it is arguably easier to relocate to Canada if you are younger than 30. People over 30 can be more set in their ways, which may contribute to culture shock.
